The storms on the east coast have proven powerful enough in some cases to make some government officials postpone Halloween to a later date, until it's safe again for trick or treaters, but for most people, October 31st will always be All Hallows' Eve.
But whether you're stuck inside or coming back in from a night of tricks and treats, you'll no doubt need some scary movies to cap off your night.
We asked the MTV News staff to share their favorite flicks for a Halloween night spent indoors, so check out our recommendations after the jump!
"Event Horizon"
Two words that echoed throughout the nightmares of my childhood: "Event Horizon." I somehow convinced my dad that it was okay for me to see this sci-fi horror romp through a haunted spaceship when I was 8. Big mistake, dad. It's worth it just to hear Sam Neil tell Lawrence Fishburn, "Where we're going, we won't need eyes." You'll wish you'd ripped yours out too after you see this film. -Brian Phares, MTV News producer
"Scream"
No one forgets their first time...watching a horror flick. And for me, the first is still the best: Wes Craven's 1996 classic "Scream." I was in junior high when I clandestinely rented the horror film using my mom's Blockbuster card, and I'll never forget the furious look on her face when she came home early from work to find me and my best friend cringing at the film's final bloody moments...which she proceeded to turn off! I didn't actually see the conclusion to this meta masterpiece until a decade later. But now that I'm a grown-up, I "Scream" whenever and wherever I want (especially on Halloween!). -Amy Wilkinson, Hollywood Crush editor
"Ernest Scared Stupid"
I wrote about it before, and I'll write about it again. By far the most disturbing movie I have ever seen is "Ernest Scared Stupid." As a child, I loved the Ernest movies. For those not familiar with this cheesy/awesome franchise, a bumbling Jim Varney would wear his blue collar working attire and make silly faces as he went through various situations kids could relate to: going to school, going to camp, saving Christmas, et cetera. However, in "Ernest Scared Stupid," Ernest has to battle a SHAPE-SHIFTING EVIL DEMON TROLL that lives in the woods and loves to bite children. This is basically the early 90's equivalent of if they made "Yo Gabba Gabba Goes to Hell" today. Go to your local gas station or Wal-Mart, look in the $3 DVD bin, and buy and watch this movie immediately. "The Thing"
John Carpenter is the King of Halloween movies. Period. And while the obvious Halloween movie from his oeuvre is probably "Halloween," his 1982 film about a parasitic shape-shifting alien is my personal fave when it comes to October 31st viewing. "The Thing" is one of those rare horror movies that has the perfect mix of creepiness, psychological horror, and poop-your-pants scary moments. Throw in the ground-breaking practical effects from Rob Bottin and the legendary Stan Winston, PLUS one of the best horror movie scores from Ennio Morricone and the director himself, John Carpenter, and you have one of the greatest horror movies ever made. -Matt Harper, MTV New producer
"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"
Along with my mom's Halloween-themed carrot and raisin salad, a huge part of my family's annual pre-trick-or-treat tradition was a viewing of Disney's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Long before Tim Burton and Johnny Depp made their stamp on the classic tale, Disney released an animated version circa 1949 that features a gangly, oddly-proportioned-but-wholly-entertaining Ichabod Crane, along with charming narration by the late Bing Crosby. I love everything about it, despite the fact that the climactic scene with the headless horsemen used to scare the crap out of me. -Kara Warner, MTV News writer
"Rosemary's Baby"
I'm something of a horror movie newb, to the point that I co-hosted a column on Movies Blog back in 2009 where I basically was introduced to the genre. But with that under my belt and having just speed-watched the first season of "American Horror Story," I'd have to say my go-to Halloween movie is "Rosemary's Baby." After all, there's nothing like witnessing the birth of the spawn of Satan to ring in All Hallows' Eve. -Terri Schwartz, Writer
